Madame Westwood                    Current Position: Grade 1 French Immersion               Updated: December 2019
Title of Activity: Mammal Information Chart

Reference Section:

National Geographic Society (1996-2012). Creature Feature. Retrieved Oct.6, 2012 from http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/kids/animals/creaturefeature/

Grade Level: 2

Subject: English

Brief Description of Activity:
Students will be put in groups and go to a website, where they can look for the information on the life, habitat food and appearance of different animals under study given by the teacher and record the information on a one page word document in point form. The websites students will visit is http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/kids/animals/creaturefeature/ and look up the information under the mammal they were assigned.

General Learner Outcome:
  • Students will listen, speak, read write, view and represent to manage ideas and information.

Specific Learner Outcome:
  • Use given categories and specific questions to find information in multimedia texts.

ICT Outcomes:

F 1.1.2 apply terminology appropriate to the technologies being used at this division level

F3.1.2 work collaboratively to share limited resources

F6.1.1 perform basic computer operations (which may vary by environment), including powering up, inserting disks, moving the cursor, clicking on an icon, using pull-down menus, executing programs, saving files, retrieving files, printing, ejecting disks and powering down

P1.1.1 create original text, using word processing software, to communicate and demonstrate understanding of forms and techniques

P1.1.2 edit complete sentences, using such features of a word processor as cut, copy and Paste.

Rationale for Computer Integration:
Computers have been integrated into this assignment to allow student to work collaboratively to gather information for an accessible resource. They can all search the animal at the same time without sharing a book. It also allows for the discovery of National Geographic kids, which contains a vast amount of secure information that could also be used in a science class.

Search Strategies Employed:
To find a resource of this activity I used google.com, which is my preferred search engine.  I knew National Geographic to be a very reputable source so I started there. When I saw that the website seemed to be at a bit of a higher language and information level, I went back to google search engine and used the quotation technique to ensure specific criteria:

“National Geographic” “Animals” “kids” and ensured that the safesearch was set to strict on the search engine.

This did bring up over 11,000,000 results, however the first entry was exactly what I was looking for: Search your favorite animals – National Geographic Kids.
